Richard & Kirsten’s Sunrise Hiking Elopement in the Mountains of Canmore

Some wedding days are calm and quiet. Others are wildly adventurous. And then there are days like Richard and Kirsten’s — a beautiful blend of meaning, emotion, laughter, and pure mountain magic.

These two university sweethearts chose to celebrate their love in the most authentic way: by hiking up a remote mountain near their home in Canmore for an intimate sunrise elopement. And yes — we started at 3:00 am with headlamps, packed backpacks, and excited hearts.

A Meaningful Mountain Ascent

This wasn’t just any hike. The mountain we climbed holds special meaning for Richard and Kirsten — it’s the peak they see from their window every day. It’s been a constant in their relationship, a backdrop to their daily lives and their shared love for the outdoors. So when it came time to choose a place to say their vows, it was the only choice that truly made sense.

A Double First Look at Sunrise

As we reached the summit, the sky began to glow with that soft, early-morning light. With chilled fingers and full hearts, Richard and Kirsten changed into their wedding attire right on the mountain. What followed was one of the most emotional double first looks I’ve ever witnessed — both turning to see each other at the same time, with the rising sun painting the sky behind them. There were tears, laughter, and so much love in that moment

Vows at the Top of the World

Surrounded by jagged peaks, golden light, and crisp mountain air, Richard and Kirsten said their vows with nothing but nature as their witness. It was raw and real — no distractions, no stress, just the two of them promising forever in a place that already held so much meaning.

Portraits, Champagne, and a Mountain Joe Shotgun

After the ceremony, we explored the ridgeline for some breathtaking portraits before the grand finale — a Mountain Joe shotgun (yes, you read that right). With hearts full of joy, they cracked open cans and toasted the start of their married life in true adventurous style.

Why This Elopement Will Stay With Me Forever

This day was the perfect example of what elopements are all about: creating space for connection, adventure, and choosing a wedding experience that reflects you. Richard and Kirsten didn’t just get married — they lived fully in every moment of their morning, from the dark hike up to the joyful celebration on the summit.

Richard and Kirsten, thank you for trusting me to hike alongside you — literally and figuratively — as you started this next chapter together. You’ve shown that love doesn’t need a crowd. It just needs intention, heart, and a view worth climbing for.
